⚠ Double-check before class

  • Showdown in the Valley: Height: the NIV gives Goliath’s height as six cubits and a span (about 9 ft 9 in), so the narration says “over nine feet.” The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Greek Old Testament say four cubits and a span (about 6 ft 9 in). If a sharp kid asks, it’s a known difference between ancient copies; either way, he towered over a shepherd boy. 17:45: the NIV says “the LORD Almighty,” the CSB “the LORD of Armies,” the ESV “the LORD of hosts.” All three mean the LORD who commands heaven’s armies. Jesse’s sons: 17:12 says eight, but 1 Chronicles 2:13–15 lists seven, so the theater only says “youngest.” The armor weights are left out on purpose (the finale asks one). 17:7: the spear shaft is “like a weaver’s rod” in the NIV and “like a weaver’s beam” in the CSB and ESV (a wooden bar from a loom); the narration says beam.
  • Who’s in the Box?: Background clues from outside 1 Samuel 17: Eliab was the first son Samuel looked at (1 Samuel 16:6); Saul hid among the baggage when he was chosen king (10:22); David played the lyre for Saul (16:23); “Elah” is the Hebrew word for a big tree (oak or terebinth); the valley is usually placed southwest of Jerusalem. All standard, but double-check if you like. Goliath clue 1: 17:7 says the spear shaft was “like a weaver’s rod” (NIV) or “weaver’s beam” (CSB, ESV), a wooden bar from a loom.
  • Pounce Board: 17:42 says David was “glowing with health” in the NIV (“ruddy” in many Bibles), so accept healthy or ruddy. 17:20: the NIV says David left the flock with a shepherd; other Bibles say “a keeper.” 17:45: the name of God differs by Bible (see the theater’s note).
  • Sing It: You Are Great: Missions facts (Atlanta area, 100+ languages, a new church) come from the 2026 leader guide; we haven’t checked them anywhere else.
  • The Big Pounce: 5,000 shekels; the NIV footnote says about 125 pounds (58 kg). Shekel weights varied a little, so some books say 126 lb or 57 kg. Closest wins anyway, so anything near 125 is the winner.

1. 📺 Kitten Spy Video

Watch Party · 5 min1 Samuel 17

Teacher note: Read the three spy questions aloud BEFORE pressing play. After the video, tables whisper or write each answer; after 3·2·1, tap every table that got it. Q1: accept armor, Saul’s armor, the king’s armor (or tunic / Saul’s clothes, helmet, sword). For the “why,” the Bible’s reason is that David wasn’t used to it; lots of retellings show it as too big or too heavy, so accept those as extras, then point out the Bible’s reason. Q2: five smooth stones — be generous if a table writes just “stones” and the number. Q3: accept the LORD or God. All three answers come straight from 1 Samuel 17:38–47, so any faithful retelling covers them; if the clip skips one, just tell the answer and give everyone the points. Optional starter before the video (the guide’s rescue race, our version — call it Help Is on the Way!): call out a problem; tables race to shout who can help. Someone broke into the house → police. A high fever → a doctor. Stuck on long division → a teacher. A toothache → a dentist. Someone struggling in the deep end → a lifeguard. Last one: you need your sin forgiven → only Jesus can. Then: today God’s people needed a rescuer too — watch who God sent.

🕵️ Kitten Spy — answer key (10 pts per table)

Spy card: “Kitten Spy is staking out the valley! Catch these 3 clues.”

  1. King Saul tried to get David ready for the fight. What did Saul put on him — and why did David take it off?
→ Saul’s own tunic, a coat of armor and a bronze helmet! David wasn’t used to them, so off they came. · 1 Samuel 17:38–39
  2. Instead, David picked something up out of a stream. What was it — and how many?
    → Five smooth stones! · 1 Samuel 17:40
  3. David told Goliath that the battle belongs to someone. Who?
    → The LORD! David trusted God — not a sword or a spear. · 1 Samuel 17:47

2. 🎭 Showdown in the Valley

Story Theater · 13 min1 Samuel 17

Teacher note: Read each narration, press Space for the cue card, then let the room perform. Before beat 1, a 20-second timeline: Saul looked like a king but kept disobeying God → God rejected him and sent Samuel to anoint the shepherd boy David (1 Samuel 15:23; 16:13) → David served Saul by playing music for him (16:23). Now the Philistines are back, ready for war. Beat 3: tap the counter a few times while the room booms “SEND ME A MAN!”, then press S to finish the count at 40. Keep the giant voices silly, not scary. Beat 6: the point of the lion and the bear isn’t that David was tough. God had rescued him before, so David trusted God to do it again. (The Bible says David struck the lion and the bear down; the picture keeps it gentle.) Beat 8: tap once per stone while the room counts to 5. Why five? The Bible doesn’t say, so don’t turn it into a quiz question. Beat 9 is a FREEZE: it cuts all sound. Hold the silence for three seconds. The Bible says Goliath cursed David and threatened him; keep the threats vague. Beat 11: next to a sword, a spear, a javelin and all that bronze, a shepherd’s sling looked like a toy, and Goliath scoffed at David’s “sticks” (17:43). Slingers could be deadly accurate (Judges 20:16), but David didn’t trust his sling: he said the LORD doesn’t save by sword or spear (17:47). Beat 12, told truthfully and gently: Goliath died. The Bible says so plainly, and we don’t need the details. If a kid asks why David killed him: this was a real war; Goliath was a soldier who came out to fight and spent 40 days defying God; David fought for God’s people and God’s name, not for fame. If a kid who has read ahead asks about verse 51, answer briefly and truthfully (David cut off Goliath’s head with the giant’s own sword, which showed both armies the fight was over) and move on. Grace, not moralism: this story isn’t mainly “be brave like David and you’ll beat your giants.” We’re more like the scared soldiers on the hill, who needed someone to fight for them. David’s courage came from trusting God, and God gave the power. Jesus is the One who fought the battle we could never win: sin and death. Gospel moment (gentle, optional), after the last beat: God made us, so He’s our rightful King (Revelation 4:11). But we’ve all gone our own way instead of His (Romans 3:23). Out of love, God sent Jesus to take the punishment our sin deserves (John 3:16). On the cross Jesus took our sin, and He gives us His perfect goodness (2 Corinthians 5:21). So trust Him and follow Him as Lord (Romans 10:9–10). “If you want to talk about that, find me after class.” No hands, no pressure. Judged moments are worth 10: boomiest giant voice, wobbliest knight, the most confident chant. If a drawn scene isn’t ready yet, its emoji shows instead.

⚠ Verify: Height: the NIV gives Goliath’s height as six cubits and a span (about 9 ft 9 in), so the narration says “over nine feet.” The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Greek Old Testament say four cubits and a span (about 6 ft 9 in).

14 scenes. Space walks each one: scene (read the narration) → cue card → payoff (effect, sound, counter taps) → judged (award mode). A FREEZE card cuts all sound. Keys: S finishes a count, R replays an effect, ← steps back (never un-banks). Judged moments: 3 (up to 30 pts per table).

3. 🙋 Questions from Kids

Watch Party · 5 minLuke 24:27

Teacher note: No spy questions here (we don’t have a transcript), so just watch together, then use the two talk prompts from the leader guide (in our words). Give each table a moment to whisper before anyone shares. Prompt 2 ideas: the whole Bible is one big story that points to Jesus (Luke 24:27, 44). Right after the first sin, God promised Someone who would crush the serpent (Genesis 3:15); the Passover lamb pointed to Jesus, the Lamb of God (Exodus 12; John 1:29); and David’s win over Goliath points to Jesus’ win over sin, death and the devil (1 Corinthians 15:54–57; Hebrews 2:14–15). Extra talk if there’s time (the guide’s discussion questions, paraphrased): (1) Does trusting God mean everything turns out the way we want? No, but we get more of God Himself: His peace, comfort, joy and hope (Philippians 4:6–7), and it shows others He’s worth trusting. (2) When have you trusted God in a hard time? Answers vary. God is with His people and faithful, just as He was with David, and He gives believers the Holy Spirit to help (John 14:16–17). (3) Why is God greater than Goliath, and even greater than sin and death? He made everything just by speaking (Psalm 33:6), holds it all together (Colossians 1:17), never sleeps (Psalm 121:4), needs no one’s help (Acts 17:24–25), and raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 6:9).

4. 🤔 Giant, Kid or King?

Basket Sort · 7 min1 Samuel 17

Teacher note: Before card 1, the guide’s welcome question: Who’s the tallest person you know? What does it feel like to stand next to someone WAY bigger and stronger than you? Tables hold up A ▲ GOLIATH, B ■ DAVID or C ● KING SAUL on “Cards up!”. Read each card aloud first. Quote cards are paraphrased. Card 6 is the sneaky one: Saul was a head taller than any other Israelite (1 Samuel 9:2; 10:23), and the people had asked for a king to fight their battles for them (8:20). Yet Israel’s tallest man stayed back, and God used the youngest shepherd instead. Enjoy the gasps. If someone says Goliath: he was taller, but he wasn’t an Israelite. After the closing card: Goliath trusted himself and his gear. David trusted God. It isn’t “be brave like David.” We’re more like that scared army, and we need Someone to fight for us. That’s why we need Jesus.

Prompt on screen: “Who was it: GOLIATH, DAVID or KING SAUL?” · 10 pts per table per card. Space runs every beat: card slams in → Cards up → stamp + card flies into its basket → why → points.

5. 🎁 Who’s in the Box?

Mystery Box · 8 min · if time1 Samuel 17

Teacher note: After each clue, pause: “Anyone want to lock in?” Name cards appear on every round to help weaker readers. Six rounds; stop whenever time’s up. Accept: Goliath for “the giant”; cheese or cheeses; Eliab or “David’s oldest brother”; Elah for the valley; Saul or King Saul; sling, and “slingshot” too, but point out that a sling had no Y-shaped frame or rubber band. It was just a strap with a pouch, whirled around and let go. The Eliab round is a “Who said it?”: the quote (paraphrased) is on screen from the start. Save the irony about who was watching the sheep for the Pounce Board: it’s the answer to Shepherd on a Mission 50.

⚠ Verify: Background clues from outside 1 Samuel 17: Eliab was the first son Samuel looked at (1 Samuel 16:6); Saul hid among the baggage when he was chosen king (10:22); David played the lyre for Saul (16:23); “Elah” is the Hebrew word for a big tree (oak or terebinth); the valley is usually placed southwest of Jerusalem. All standard, but double-check if you like. Goliath clue 1: 17:7 says the spear shaft was “like a weaver’s rod” (NIV) or “weaver’s beam” (CSB, ESV), a wooden bar from a loom.

How it runs: Space shows the next clue (hardest first) and the value drops. A table locks in by writing its answer and turning the board face down — press its number (1/2/3); the screen shows only a padlock. R (or Space after the last clue) opens the box. Then flip the boards, tap who was right, Enter banks each table’s locked value.

6. 🐾 Pounce Board

Pounce Board · 10 min1 Samuel 17

Teacher note: Put a Bible on every table. Open-Bible tiles: Giant Trouble 30, Shepherd on a Mission 50, Whose Battle? 30 and 50, Bigger Than Giants 40. Let the lowest-scoring table pick first. Catnip (double) tiles: Sticks & Stones 30 and Bigger Than Giants 50. No need to clear the board; stop when time’s up. Giant Trouble 20: accept “Israel would serve the Philistines” or “be their slaves.” 30: any one of great riches, the king’s daughter as his wife, no taxes for his family. 40: “carried his shield” or “shield-bearer.” 50: any one of young (just a boy), healthy or ruddy, handsome. If a table says he came with sticks or a staff, that’s true (17:43), but the tile asks what David looked like. Shepherd on a Mission 40: full credit needs both parts (the LORD, and He had rescued David before); “God” alone is half. 50: accept “a shepherd,” “a keeper,” or “someone to watch them.” Point out the irony: Eliab grumbled about the sheep, but David had them covered (17:20, 28). Sticks & Stones 20: stream, brook or creek. 40: all three (staff, bag or pouch, sling). 50: only “sword” is in the verse; if a table says spear or armor, that’s true too, but ask for the one thing the Bible names. Whose Battle? 30 is the guide’s Bible skill: accept Almighty (NIV), of Armies (CSB) or of hosts (ESV, KJV); they all mean the LORD who commands heaven’s armies. 40: world or earth. Bigger Than Giants 20: the third day (Sunday or Easter morning is fine too). 30: any two of sin, death, the devil. 50: anything that says trust or believe in Jesus is full credit. That’s grace, not effort (Ephesians 2:8–9).

⚠ Verify: 17:42 says David was “glowing with health” in the NIV (“ruddy” in many Bibles), so accept healthy or ruddy. 17:20: the NIV says David left the flock with a shepherd; other Bibles say “a keeper.” 17:45: the name of God differs by Bible (see the theater’s note).

How it runs: the picking table chooses a tile (it rotates; 1/2/3 changes it). Read the clue, every table writes, Space = 3·2·1 Cards up!, then award every right table the tile value. The picker gets +10 more if right. 🌿 Catnip tiles double everything. Short on time? L plays one lightning column (no picker bonus). Catnip tiles: Sticks & Stones 30, Bigger Than Giants 50.

7. 🐈 Valley Story Line-Up

Line Up the Litter · 6 min · if time1 Samuel 17

Teacher note: Tables write their letter order on a whiteboard (S starts the 90-second timer). After Boards up!, you can type each table’s letters (optional) for live ✓/✗. Read each card aloud as it lands; the reveal IS the retelling. Short on time? Press Q for quick mode (first and last slot only, double points). The trickiest pair: David’s lion-and-bear talk with Saul comes BEFORE the armor. Saul sent him off with the LORD’s blessing, and then dressed him (17:37–38).

Prompt: Put the story of David and Goliath back in order!

8. 📜 Jeremiah 10:6

Verse Vanish · 5 minJeremiah 10:6

Teacher note: Start with Vanish: each Space hides a few more words; a table can press its number to recite with the blanks showing, for 10 points per blank. Then First Letters, Scramble and Voices as time allows. N shows the memory hook. Motions (from the guide): “No one is like you” = cross your arms in an X, then sweep them out to your sides; “great” = thumbs up; “mighty in power” = flex an arm. Wording heads-up: we use the NIV (“mighty in power”). The leader guide quotes the CSB, which says God’s name is “great in power,” and its key passage runs on into verse 7. The song is built on the guide’s passage, so it may sing slightly different or extra words (we haven’t checked its lyrics). If kids notice, say that Bibles translate it a little differently, and both mean God’s name is full of power. Tie-in: Goliath was huge and loud, but no one is like the LORD. He gave David the power to win.

“No one is like you, LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power.”

Jeremiah 10:6

  1. 🫥 Vanish (key V) — A kitten swipes words away — say it again each time. 16 words, 3 vanish per Space → 6 levels. Table challenge (1/2/3): 10 × blanks — e.g. 9 blanks = +90, all blank = +160.
  2. 🔤 First letters (key L) — Only the first letter is left — can you still say it?
  3. 🧩 Scramble (key S) — Put the pieces back in order.
  4. 🎭 Voices (key W) — Spin a silly voice and say it together. Three voices, then Space moves on (W spins more).

Scramble pieces, in order: 1. No one is like you, 2. LORD; 3. you are great, 4. and your name 5. is mighty 6. in power.

Motions: “No” → ❌ arms X → sweep · “great” → 👍 thumbs up · “power” → 💪 flex

Memory hook (N): “Nobody Likes Loud Giants Nibbling My Pebbles” — No one, Like, LORD, Great, Name, Mighty, Power

Skin: ⭐ Stars. Wording is shown exactly as written in the lesson file.

9. 🎤 Sing It: You Are Great

Watch Party · 4 minJeremiah 10:6

Teacher note: Just sing! The lyrics are in the video. It’s built on the leader guide’s longer key passage (Jeremiah 10:6–7a, CSB), so it may say “great in power” and carry on into verse 7. We haven’t checked the words, so follow the screen. Add the verse motions (arms X → sweep, thumbs up, flex). For verse 7 the guide adds: shrug with open hands for the line asking who wouldn’t fear God, put on a pretend crown for the “King of the nations” line, and hold out open hands for the last line. The choreography version of the same song is also on the channel (OVPpvzMipWI) if you’d rather learn the moves another week. If there’s energy left, play it once more and let each table take a turn singing loudest. Optional missions prayer (from the leader guide): in the Atlanta, Georgia area, people speak more than 100 languages, and a missionary family there has started a new church. Pray that many people there would hear about Jesus and trust Him.

⚠ Verify: Missions facts (Atlanta area, 100+ languages, a new church) come from the 2026 leader guide; we haven’t checked them anywhere else.

  1. Sing it again — LOUDER! 🎤 Motions on: arms X · thumbs up · FLEX!
  2. Which line is stuck in YOUR head? Sing it to your table!
  3. Who could YOU tell the story of David and Goliath to this week?
  4. 🙏 Let’s pray: thank God that nothing is greater than Him, and ask Him to help us trust Him with anything that feels giant-sized this week.

10. 🏆 The Big Pounce

Big Pounce · 6 min1 Samuel 17:5

Teacher note: Tables write a secret bet first; then the question and think music, and each table writes one number. Closest wins their bet; everyone else loses theirs (never below 0). Wild guesses are part of the fun; the number line handles huge ranges. Backups on the title card (V): “Stream stones flash count” (43 stones plus one sneaky frog) and “Spear point” (about 15 pounds). Flash tips: before the flash, let each table split the screen, with one kid counting the left, one the middle and one the right. At “Time’s up!”, say: write your count AND anything strange you spotted. Only tables that wrote the frog BEFORE the question appeared get a bonus.

⚠ Verify: 5,000 shekels; the NIV footnote says about 125 pounds (58 kg). Shekel weights varied a little, so some books say 126 lb or 57 kg. Closest wins anyway, so anything near 125 is the winner.

Bets: each table may bet 0 up to its score — or up to 20 if it has less (so nobody is out). Winners gain their bet; everyone else loses theirs; scores never go below 0. The reveal goes lowest score first, then the podium, then the memory verse. Think clock: 45s (P pauses, I shows the hint).

Main question🎯 Closest number1 Samuel 17:5

Category: Giant-Sized Armor

Question: Goliath’s coat of bronze scale armor was HEAVY. About how many POUNDS did it weigh? Closest table wins!

Answer: 125 pounds — closest table(s) win. The number line switches to a log scale by itself for huge ranges.

Read at the reveal: About 125 pounds, as heavy as a grown-up! (The Bible says 5,000 shekels of bronze.) Goliath trusted all that bronze, but God gave David power to defeat him with one small stone. No one is like the LORD!

Backup 1 · Stream stones flash count⚡ Flash count1 Samuel 17:40, 47, 49

Category: David’s Stream

Question: How many STONES did you count in the stream? Stones only — closest table wins!

Answer: 43 🪨 shown for 8s (seed 3003) · one hidden 🐸 — +10 bonus to any table that spots it. Closest count wins.

Read at the reveal: 43 stones, plus one sneaky frog! David chose five smooth stones, and only one was needed, because the battle is the LORD’s.

Backup 2 · Spear point🎯 Closest number1 Samuel 17:7, 47

Category: Giant-Sized Spear

Question: Goliath’s spear had an iron point on the end. About how many POUNDS did the point ALONE weigh? Closest table wins!

Answer: 15 pounds — closest table(s) win. The number line switches to a log scale by itself for huge ranges.

Read at the reveal: About 15 pounds (600 shekels of iron), like a heavy bowling ball on the end of a pole! But the LORD doesn’t save by sword or spear.

⚠ Verify: 600 shekels; the NIV footnote says about 15 pounds (about 6.9 kg).
