⚠ Double-check before class

  • What’s in the Box?: Background clues (not in 1 Samuel 16): “piano” is short for the Italian “pianoforte” (soft-loud), invented around 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori; bongos come from eastern Cuba in the 1800s; the lyre’s Hebrew name is “kinnor,” a small hand-held wooden stringed instrument (1 Kings 10:12); Saul stood a head taller than everyone (1 Samuel 9:2). All are standard, but double-check if you like.
  • Pounce Board: “Bethlehem” = Hebrew “Beit Lechem,” house of bread (standard). 2 Samuel 23:1 “the sweet psalmist of Israel” is KJV/ESV/NKJV wording; NIV says “the hero of Israel’s songs.” Psalm 103’s heading reads “Of David” in most Bibles.
  • The Big Pounce: 73 = the psalms whose Hebrew headings say “of David” (the count behind most English Bibles — NIV, ESV, KJV: Psalms 3–9, 11–32, 34–41, 51–65, 68–70, 86, 101, 103, 108–110, 122, 124, 131, 133, 138–145). Other counts exist: the Greek Septuagint credits David with more (about 84), and the New Testament also credits him with Psalms 2 and 95 (Acts 4:25; Hebrews 4:7). Closest wins, so small differences won’t matter — if a table argues for 75 with that reason, give them a cheer.

1. 📺 Kitten Spy Video

Watch Party · 4 min1 Samuel 16:14–23

Teacher note: Read the three spy questions aloud BEFORE pressing play. After the video, tables whisper or write each answer; after 3·2·1, tap every table that got it. Q1: “harp” counts too — some Bibles (KJV, NKJV) say harp. Q2: accept better, calm, refreshed, relieved, happier. Q3: armor-bearer; if the clip only shows David serving or playing for Saul, accept “served the king” or “his musician.” All three answers come straight from 1 Samuel 16:21–23. The whole 1:48 clip plays (from 0:00).

🕵️ Kitten Spy — answer key (10 pts per table)

Spy card: “Kitten Spy needs sharp eyes AND sharp ears! Catch these 3 clues.”

  1. What instrument did David play for King Saul?
    → A lyre — a small, harp-like instrument with strings. · 1 Samuel 16:23
  2. How did Saul feel when David played for him?
→ Better! He felt calm and refreshed, and the trouble left him. · 1 Samuel 16:23
  3. Saul liked David a lot. What job did Saul give him?
    → Armor-bearer — David served the king! · 1 Samuel 16:21

2. 🎭 Music for a Troubled King

Story Theater · 10 min1 Samuel 16:14–23

Teacher note: Read each narration, press Space for the cue card, then let the room perform. Beat 1 is last week’s recap — keep it to 30 seconds. Saul’s scene (beat 2): keep it calm and simple — no scary details. The Bible says the Spirit of the LORD left Saul and an evil (some Bibles say “harmful”) spirit from the LORD troubled him (16:14), after Saul kept turning away from God (13:13–14; 15:11, 23; 16:1). If kids ask: (1) God is always good and never does wrong — this was His judgment on Saul, and it shows God rules over everything, even evil spirits (Psalm 103:19). (2) Feeling sad or scared does NOT mean God sent something bad to you — Saul’s trouble was a special case. (3) In the Old Testament, God’s Spirit came on leaders to do their job (Judges 3:10; 6:34; 1 Samuel 10:10; 11:6; 16:13); Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would be with His people forever (John 14:16–17), and He is stronger than any evil (1 John 4:4). (4) It wasn’t magic music — the LORD was with David (16:18), and when David played, Saul found relief (16:23) — the real help came from God. Bible skill: in 16:14 “Spirit” has a capital S — it means God’s own Spirit, not the evil spirit or a person’s spirit. Six-compliment beat (4): tap the counter once per move while the room acts: strum = plays well · flex = brave · sword = warrior · chat = speaks well · hair flip = good-looking · point up = the LORD is with him — on that last move everyone shouts “THE LORD IS WITH HIM!” Then say: the servant could SEE that God was with David — people can notice God is with us by how we love Him and others. Donkey beat (6): tap once per gift. “Never too important” beat (8): David knew he’d be king, but he served Saul and waited for God’s timing. Beat 10 is today’s Story Point — the whole room whispers it (don’t wake the king!). Last two beats (Christ Connection): David served though he’d be king; Jesus, though He is God, became a servant, washed His disciples’ feet, died for our sin and rose again (Philippians 2:5–8; John 13:3–5; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4). David’s music gave Saul relief for a while; Jesus gives lasting peace with God (Romans 5:1). The last narration ends with “So… who is our King?” — the cue card gives the room the answer to shout. Gospel moment (gentle, optional): “Our serving doesn’t save us — Jesus does. Have you trusted King Jesus? If you want to talk about it, find me after class.” No hands, no pressure. Judged moments are worth 10: six moves, best sheep, most peaceful air-lyre, best whisper.

12 scenes. Space walks each one: scene (read the narration) → cue card → payoff (effect, sound, counter taps) → judged (award mode). A FREEZE card cuts all sound. Keys: S finishes a count, R replays an effect, ← steps back (never un-banks). Judged moments: 4 (up to 40 pts per table).

3. 🙋 Questions from Kids

Watch Party · 5 min1 Samuel 16:14–23

Teacher note: No spy questions here (we don’t have a transcript) — just watch together, then use the talk prompts (all three come from the leader guide; the third is the missions moment). Give each table a moment to whisper before anyone shares. Prompt 1 ideas: listen, sit with them, pray for them, write a kind note, play or sing a song (like David!), invite them to play — and tell a grown-up if someone is very sad. It’s OK to be sad; we don’t have to “fix” everyone. Prompt 2: Jesus died for our sin and rose again, beating sin and death. Everyone who trusts Him will live with God forever, where He will wipe away every tear — no more crying or pain (Revelation 21:3–4). Until then, God is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). Prompt 3 (missions moment): many older Thai people are devout Buddhists, but younger people are often more open to hearing about Jesus. A new believers class meets at a university, and missionaries hope to start a new church. Let a volunteer (or you) pray for Thai students to trust Jesus and for more churches in Bangkok. It ties to prompt 2: the good news that will one day end all sadness is going to the whole world, because Jesus rules over the world.

  2. How did Jesus make a way for ALL sadness to be gone forever one day?
  3. 🌏 Missions moment: Bangkok, Thailand has more than a MILLION university students! Missionaries help them learn English and tell them about Jesus. Who will pray for them?

4. 🤝 Humble Helper?

Basket Sort · 5 minPhilippians 2:3

Teacher note: Tables hold up A ▲ HUMBLE HELPER or B ■ TOO IMPORTANT? on “Cards up!”. Read each card aloud first. Humility = thinking of others more than yourself (Philippians 2:3) — David didn’t think he was too important to serve Saul. The “Too important?” cards are things we ALL do sometimes — keep it light and never point at a real kid. The cat-carrying king is the silly one — enjoy the groans. Grace, not moralism — after the closing card, say: serving doesn’t make God love us more, and it doesn’t save us — Jesus does. We love and serve because He loved us first (1 John 4:19). Jesus washed feet and died for people who get these cards wrong — that’s all of us. Want a warm-up first? The guide’s Set the Tray relay: one kid per table at a time sets a tray in order (tray, plate, napkin, fork, cup) — setting the table is one way to serve.

Prompt on screen: “HUMBLE HELPER — or TOO IMPORTANT?” · 10 pts per table per card. Space runs every beat: card slams in → Cards up → stamp + card flies into its basket → why → points.

🤝 HUMBLE HELPER👑 TOO IMPORTANT?
#CardBasket
1

🍽️ Setting the table for dinner before anyone even asks.

Why: That’s serving! Setting the table is a simple way to love your family — and God is pleased when we serve in love. (Galatians 5:13; Hebrews 13:16)

🤝 HUMBLE HELPER
2

😎 “Set the table? That’s a little-kid job. I’m WAY too cool for that.”

Why: Even David — already chosen to be king — carried armor and played music for Saul. Nobody’s too cool to serve! (1 Samuel 16:13, 21, 23)

👑 TOO IMPORTANT?
3

🥪 Your friend drops their lunch tray and people giggle. You kneel down and help pick it up.

Why: You cared more about your friend than about how you looked. That’s humility! (Philippians 2:3–4)

🤝 HUMBLE HELPER
4

🎮 Pretending you didn’t hear Mom call for help because your game is at a really good part.

Why: We’ve all done it! Putting ME first is selfish pride. Good news: when we confess it, God forgives us — and He helps us change. (Philippians 2:4; 1 John 1:9)

👑 TOO IMPORTANT?
5

🪑 Inviting the new kid to sit with you — even though your friends are saving you a seat.

Why: Thinking of others more than yourself — that’s exactly what humility looks like! (Philippians 2:3)

🤝 HUMBLE HELPER
6

📋 You’ll help clean up after the party — but only if you get to be the boss of everyone.

Why: Serving isn’t about being in charge. Jesus said whoever wants to be first must be the servant of everyone. (Mark 9:35)

👑 TOO IMPORTANT?
7

🏆 Your team won, so you tell the other team they have to put ALL the pieces away.

Why: Winning doesn’t make you too important to help. The Bible says to honor others above yourself! (Romans 12:10)

👑 TOO IMPORTANT?
8

🧦 Folding the laundry — and matching every single sock — with a good attitude.

Why: Chores done cheerfully honor God. Work with all your heart, like you’re doing it for the Lord! (Colossians 3:23)

🤝 HUMBLE HELPER
9

🎵 Your little brother is scared of the thunder, so you sit with him and hum a song until he feels better.

Why: Just like David! His music helped troubled King Saul feel better. (1 Samuel 16:23)

🤝 HUMBLE HELPER
10

🐱 A king who makes his cat carry his crown, his cape AND his snack tray.

Why: Silly kitty-bossing king! The real King of kings, Jesus, did the opposite — He came to serve. (Mark 10:45)

👑 TOO IMPORTANT?

✨ Closing card — every basket sweeps into one big idea

👑🧼✝️ Jesus is the ULTIMATE Servant: the King of kings washed His friends’ feet — and gave His life for us! (John 13:3–5; Philippians 2:5–8)

5. 🎁 What’s in the Box?

Mystery Box · 7 min · if time1 Samuel 16:14–23

Teacher note: This is the guide’s “Guess the Instrument” starter, mixed with people from today’s story. After each clue, pause: “Anyone want to lock in?” The piano and bongos are just for fun — they aren’t in the Bible (the reference line says so). Optional: right after each instrument reveal, play a 5-second clip from your phone, or have the whole room air-play it. Point: music can calm us, cheer us, make us dance — and praise God. Accept “harp” for the lyre — some Bibles (KJV, NKJV) say harp. Bongos: accept “drums.” The servant round is the sneaky one: the Bible never gives his name. Name cards appear on every round to help weaker readers. Live option (guide): invite a worship-team musician to show their instrument after the lyre round. Playing music serves the church as we worship, and every one of us has ways to serve and glorify God.

⚠ Verify: Background clues (not in 1 Samuel 16): “piano” is short for the Italian “pianoforte” (soft-loud), invented around 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori; bongos come from eastern Cuba in the 1800s; the lyre’s Hebrew name is “kinnor,” a small hand-held wooden stringed instrument (1 Kings 10:12); Saul stood a head taller than everyone (1 Samuel 9:2). All are standard, but double-check if you like.

How it runs: Space shows the next clue (hardest first) and the value drops. A table locks in by writing its answer and turning the board face down — press its number (1/2/3); the screen shows only a padlock. R (or Space after the last clue) opens the box. Then flip the boards, tap who was right, Enter banks each table’s locked value.

6. 📖 The Ultimate Servant

Kitten Race · 12 minJohn 13; Philippians 2

Teacher note: Put a Bible on every table before you start (same translation helps). Drill call: “Swords up!” (closed Bibles held high) → read the reference aloud → “CHARGE!” The first table to find it stands and reads it aloud; then every table writes the answer before the 90-second timer ends (press Space early if everyone’s ready). Space reveals; tap every table that got it — their kittens step down the road. Want a speed bonus? Give the first finder the manual +10. First to 5 steps gets +30 and the payoff; questions 7–8 are extras — press E to end when time’s up. After each answer, say ONE sentence on how it shows Jesus is the ultimate Servant (or let one table answer). Keep it under 30 seconds. Q3: the leader guide prints “Luke 12:24–27” — almost certainly a typo for Luke 22:24–27, where Jesus says He is among them as one who serves; this game uses 22:24–27. Accept: Q1 “example”; Q2 “ransom” (NIrV: the price for setting people free); Q4 death / death on a cross / the cross; Q5 any one of: good news for the poor, heal broken hearts, set captives/prisoners free, comfort people who mourn, give joy or beauty instead of sadness; Q6 a bruised/bent reed (or twig), or a smoldering wick or flame (KJV: smoking flax) — whatever their Bible calls them; Q7 peace, healing or being made whole (one is enough). Keep the answer bar short — read the fuller answer aloud.

Skin: 🛣️ Road · goal 5 steps · 10 pts per step · finish bonus 30 / 20 / 10 · 90s per question (lightning). Space = reveal + award bar (1/2/3, Enter). E = end the race early.

  2. 2.⚔️ MATTHEW 20:28 — Jesus gave His life as the price to set many free. What word does the verse use? → Ransom (He came to serve — not to be served!) · Matthew 20:28
  3. 3.⚔️ LUKE 22:24–27 — Jesus’ friends argued at dinner. What were they arguing about? → Who was the greatest! (Jesus: I’m among you as one who serves) · Luke 22:24–27
  4. 4.⚔️ PHILIPPIANS 2:5–8 — Jesus is God, but He humbled Himself. How far did His obedience go? → Death on a cross (He became a servant — for us!) · Philippians 2:8
  5. 5.⚔️ ISAIAH 61:1–3 — God’s Spirit is on the One He anointed. Name ONE thing He came to do for sad or hurting people. → Comfort, heal, set free (Jesus said this was about Him! (Luke 4:21)) · Isaiah 61:1–3
  6. 6.⚔️ MATTHEW 12:17–21 — God’s gentle Servant won’t break or snuff out two fragile things. Name one! → A reed or a wick (Jesus is gentle with hurting people) · Matthew 12:20
  7. 7.⚔️ BONUS · ISAIAH 53:5 — God’s Servant was punished for our sins. What did that bring us? → Peace and healing (Jesus took the punishment for us) · Isaiah 53:5
  8. 8.⚔️ BONUS · PHILIPPIANS 2:9–11 — One day, what will every tongue say about Jesus? → “Jesus Christ is Lord!” (Jesus is our King forever!) · Philippians 2:11

Payoff when the first kitten finishes: “The Servant is the King!” — Jesus came to serve — all the way to the cross — and He rose again! He rules with perfect love. Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world. (Philippians 2:5–11; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4)

7. 🐾 Pounce Board

Pounce Board · 10 min1 Samuel 16:14–23

Teacher note: Let the lowest-scoring table pick first. Catnip (double) tiles: Servant’s Report 50 and Music & Worship 30. No need to clear the board — stop when time’s up. Bibles can stay open (they’re on the tables for the drill) — Gifts 40 and Music & Worship 10 and 50 are open-Bible tiles. Servant’s Report 10: accept troubled, upset, sad, miserable, scared, tormented — any “feeling awful.” 20: “Hairball” is full credit. 40: Bethlehem is half; add “house of bread” for full. Servant’s Report 50: any four — Bibles word 16:18 differently, so count skilled musician / plays the lyre or harp; brave / valiant / mighty man of valor; warrior / man of war; speaks well / wise / prudent / eloquent / good with words; good-looking / handsome / fine-looking / comely / a man of good presence; the LORD is with him. Gifts 20: sheep or flock. Gifts 30: all three for full, two for half (the donkey isn’t a gift!). Gifts 40 is an open-Bible tile — accept serve or help others (KJV: minister). Gifts 50: God + Jesus for full, one for half. Saul & David 20: ‘Hairball’ is full credit. 30: both for full, one for half. 40 (the one recap tile): served Saul / worked for him / waited for God’s timing — anything humble. 50: the request (let David stay and serve) plus the reason (pleased with him / David found favor) — half for just the request. Music & Worship 40: psalmist (KJV/ESV/NKJV wording); accept singer, songwriter, psalm-writer, or “hero of Israel’s songs” (NIV). 50: accept whatever their Bible lists — trumpet, ram’s horn / horn / shofar, harp, lyre, lute, psaltery, timbrel/tambourine, strings, pipe/flute/organ, cymbals. Who Is Our King? 20 is a trick question — let them groan. 30: any true example. 40: peace with God, forgiveness, eternal life or joy (Romans 5:1; John 14:27).

⚠ Verify: “Bethlehem” = Hebrew “Beit Lechem,” house of bread (standard). 2 Samuel 23:1 “the sweet psalmist of Israel” is KJV/ESV/NKJV wording; NIV says “the hero of Israel’s songs.” Psalm 103’s heading reads “Of David” in most Bibles.

How it runs: the picking table chooses a tile (it rotates; 1/2/3 changes it). Read the clue, every table writes, Space = 3·2·1 Cards up!, then award every right table the tile value. The picker gets +10 more if right. 🌿 Catnip tiles double everything. Short on time? L plays one lightning column (no picker bonus). Catnip tiles: Servant’s Report 50, Music & Worship 30.

8. 🎡 Servant Heart Wheel

Kitty Wheel · 5 min · if timePhilippians 2:3

Teacher note: Spin, read the prompt, press P to fairly pick which table shares, award +10 for a thoughtful share — then YOU ask “Who is our King?” and the whole class shouts the chorus. The guide’s three discussion questions are the humility, glory and serve-this-week slices — use Cat’s Choice to reach them if the wheel doesn’t. Humility (Philippians 2:3): thinking of others more than yourself — David didn’t think he was too important to serve Saul. Glory (Matthew 5:16): when people see the good we do, they praise our Father in heaven. Serve this week: chores at home, set the table, be kind to a friend — do it all for Jesus (Colossians 3:17). Feelings slices: it’s OK to feel sad — God is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). If a kid shares something heavy, thank them and follow up privately. ‘God with you’ slice: people can notice God is with us by how we love Him and love others (John 13:35), just as the servant noticed it in David (1 Samuel 16:18). (Missions moment now lives in Questions from Kids.)

Talk it over: Land on a question, talk it over at your table, then share. 10 prompts — each one falls asleep after it’s used. Spins land at random; press O to land on the next prompt in the order below instead. Press P on a prompt to fairly pick which table shares. Award +10 for a great share (Space / Enter). After each share everyone shouts “Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world!”

9. 📜 Psalm 103:19

Verse Vanish · 5 minPsalm 103:19

Teacher note: Last week with this verse! Start with First Letters (the leader guide’s activity): every word shrinks to its first letter and tables fill in the words out loud. Then Vanish, Relay, Scramble and Voices as time allows — Vanish: each Space hides a few more words; a table can press its number to recite with the blanks showing for 10 points per blank. N shows the memory hook. Motions: throne = sit up tall like a king, heaven = point up, kingdom = hands make a crown, all = arms wide. When you finish, ask “Who is our King?” — everyone: “Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world!” Tie-in: Saul’s reign fell apart, but God’s throne never wobbles — and Jesus, the Son of David, reigns forever (Luke 1:32–33).

“The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.”

Psalm 103:19

  1. 🔤 First letters (key L) — Only the first letter is left — can you still say it?
  2. 🫥 Vanish (key V) — A kitten swipes words away — say it again each time. 14 words, 2 vanish per Space → 7 levels. Table challenge (1/2/3): 10 × blanks — e.g. 6 blanks = +60, all blank = +140.
  3. 🏃 Relay (key R) — One part per table — pass it on! Tables that say their part perfectly get +20.
  4. 🧩 Scramble (key S) — Put the pieces back in order.
  5. 🎭 Voices (key W) — Spin a silly voice and say it together. Three voices, then Space moves on (W spins more).

10. 🏆 The Big Pounce

Big Pounce · 6 minPsalms (titles); 2 Samuel 23:1

Teacher note: Tables write a secret bet first; then the question and think music — tables write one number (0–150). Closest wins their bet; everyone else loses theirs (never below 0). The hint on screen (Psalm 103) doesn’t give the number away. Backups on the title card (V): “Sheep flash count” (43 sheep + one sneaky goat) and “Waiting backup” (David’s age when he first became king — 30). Sheep flash tips: before the flash, let each table split the screen — one kid counts the left, one the middle, one the right. At “Time’s up!”, say: write your count AND anything strange you spotted. Only tables that wrote the goat BEFORE the question appeared get a bonus.

⚠ Verify: 73 = the psalms whose Hebrew headings say “of David” (the count behind most English Bibles — NIV, ESV, KJV: Psalms 3–9, 11–32, 34–41, 51–65, 68–70, 86, 101, 103, 108–110, 122, 124, 131, 133, 138–145).

Bets: each table may bet 0 up to its score — or up to 20 if it has less (so nobody is out). Winners gain their bet; everyone else loses theirs; scores never go below 0. The reveal goes lowest score first, then the podium, then the memory verse. Think clock: 45s (P pauses, I shows the hint).

Main question🎯 Closest numberPsalms (titles); 2 Samuel 23:1

Category: David’s Songbook

Question: The book of Psalms has 150 songs. How many have David’s name in their title — like “A psalm of David”? Closest table wins!

Hint: Our memory verse psalm — Psalm 103 — is one of them!

Answer: 73 psalms — closest table(s) win. The number line switches to a log scale by itself for huge ranges.

Read at the reveal: 73! In most Bibles, 73 psalms have David’s name in the title — about half the book. The shepherd who played for Saul became Israel’s great songwriter, and many of his songs point to Jesus, the forever King!

Backup 1 · Sheep flash count⚡ Flash count1 Samuel 16:19–20

Category: David’s Flock

Question: How many SHEEP did you count in David’s field? Sheep only — closest table wins!

Answer: 43 🐑 shown for 8s (seed 1616) · one hidden 🐐 — +10 bonus to any table that spots it. Closest count wins.

Read at the reveal: 43 sheep — plus one sneaky young goat! Saul sent for David, the one out with the sheep, and Jesse sent a young goat to the king along with him.

Backup 2 · Waiting backup🎯 Closest number2 Samuel 2:4; 5:4–5

Category: David’s Big Wait

Question: God chose David while he was a young shepherd. How old was David when he FIRST became king?

Answer: 30 years old — closest table(s) win. The number line switches to a log scale by itself for huge ranges.

Read at the reveal: 30! David waited years — and served King Saul faithfully — before God made him king. At 30 he became king over Judah; about seven and a half years later (around 37) he became king over all Israel.
